Studio Renovations

The new owner of WAPJ will begin doing renovations to the studio starting on Friday at 6 pm. Consequently, there will be no local broadcasts including our show over the next few weeks. The station will broadcast holiday music and will also provide live coverage of Torrington High School boys and girls basketball home games. While we are disappointed that we won't be able to do the show, we are however very excited about the upcoming improvements to the studio. Have a happy and safe holiday season and a Happy New Year!

More on James Booker

I forgot to mention ..Harry Connick Jr., a student and close friend of Booker, is probably his most renowned disciple. I wouldn't have guessed that connection.

Ray Charles

I want to thank Vinny for doing something unique on last night's show although he got the idea from Ol' Dave Massota. Vinny played some great Ray Charles music and then followed it up with some artists that were influenced by Ray. He played songs from artists James Booker, Henry Butler and Van Morrison. I had never heard of Booker and Butler before but I greatly enjoyed their songs that Vinny played.

Murray

Vinny and I would like to thank Murray Williams for appearing on our show on Tuesday to talk about the baseball playoffs and the upcoming basketball season. He was a great guest, and we always have a great time when he comes on. He is a Friend of the Show. We will have him on again in the future to talk about the NFL playoffs and March Madness.

We would also like to apologize for the technical problem (Vinny's microphone went out near the end of the show). Next week we will return to play some music. If there is song you would like to hear or have a suggestion, please let us know.

Tom Waits

Last week I played "Better Off Without a Wife" by Tom Waits. As Vinny mentioned, his album, Nighthawks at the Diner, is one of his most accessible and entertaining works. I found a fairly decent You Tube clip of him performing the song live: clip

I also found a clip when he appeared on the 1970's television show, "Fernwood Tonight" with Martin Mull and Fred Willard. After the song, his interview is very funny. Hope you enjoy this clip too.

Fernowood Tonight" was a pretty funny, quirky show. It reminds me of our radio shoe!

Word I was looking for

I think the song they play when the bride comes down the aisle may be called processional or wedding march. I failed to say that Phoebe Snow's daughter Valerie died after living a much longer life than predicted. Her daughter passed at 31 in 2007. This is why Phoebe was able to resume touring. Glad we got to see her before her passing in

Tom Waits

Loved the Tom Waits's song. Both Paul and I get him. I think you will be hearing more. He is a gifted songwriter. Many of his songs covered by other musicians like the Eagles and Springsteen. Sometimes Paul and I are on the same page.

Miles 4 MOE Foundation

Vinny and I were fortunate to participate last Saturday in the Second Annual Miles For Moe Walk and Bike Ride Day. Emil "Moe" Renzullo was born with Down's Syndrome and other medical problems which required numerous surgeries. Moe loved his time at the summer camp formerly called Camp LARC. Unfortunately he passed away at the age of 12 in April of 2010 after being diagnosed with leukemia. Everyone who met Moe was touched by his spirit and determination. Camp LARC was renamed Camp MOE in his honor. The foundation was started so that families with special needs children who could not afford to send their child to the camp could do so. The foundation also helps families who have a child diagnosed with cancer. Although I am not a parent, I can't imagine the despair that a parent would suffer if they could not afford to send their child to summer camp. For the child it would be just as worse. This foundation makes sure that this doesn't happen. There was a great turnout despite the unsettled weather. This is a great charity. Here is the website to find out more and hopefully make a donation. Miles 4 Moe Foundation

Corrections

I failed to mention that Jeff Beck was playing guitar on the first Trombone Shorty tune 'Do to Me'. Shorty has opened for Jeff Beck quite a bit in Europe.

Last week I played a couple songs by Kermit Ruffins. I identfied him as a trombone player. He is a trumpet player following the tradition of the great Satchmo.

I enjoyed Paul's pick of Graham Parsons's tunes. Our picks were pretty compatible last week.

Thanks to Peter for stopping by.
